A interpretação de um ensaio de caudal visa a determinação dos parâmetros hidráulicos do aquífero nas imediações da captação e do comportamento desta em função das condições da sua exploração.

Através desses parâmetros é possível (1) dimensionar o regime de extracção de água, (2) seleccionar o equipamento de bombagem, (3) determinar a profundidade de colocação equipamento de bombagem e (4) posicionamento das sondas de nível, (5) determinação do caudal óptimo de exploração e dos rebaixamentos do nível piezométrico e (6) eventual dimensionamento de tanques de armazenamento.
Assim, é possível obter o máximo rendimento da captação, prolongando a sua vida útil.
