A execução de poços de reconhecimento geotécnico com recurso a escavadoras ou retroescavadoras de porte variável pode permitir-nos obter, com custos muito controlados, as seguintes informações:

- Litologia;
- Espessura de solos orgânicos, espessura e tipo de solos residuais;
- Granulometria dos solos;
- Grau de alteração do maciço terroso;
- Profundidade do bedrock;
- Nível freático
Esta informação, embora não nos permita determinar a tensão admissível, resistência ou capacidade de carga do solo ( limite de carga que o solo pode suportar sem se romper ou sofrer deformação exagerada), permite-nos obter informações que serão extremamente importantes para o projectista nomeadamente a presença do nível freático e a profundidade do bedrock.
Nas fotografias anteriores podem ser observados dois equipamentos utilizados na abertura de poços de reconhecimento.
A informação observada no terreno é depois, de forma esquemática, convertida num log. Neste log, para além da informação anteriormente referida deve ainda ser colocado:
- Referência do cliente;
- Local do estudo
- Coordenadas (ETRS89) e cota
- Equipamento utilizado
- Quem desenhou os logs
O óptimo é inimigo do bom.
Conseguimos com os poços de reconhecimento, a custos muito controlados, obter informação preciosa para o projectista. Não é recomendável apenas utilizar os poços de reconhecimento mas, perante um cenário em que a opção é não obter qualquer informação acerca do subsolo, estes são uma opção que deve ser considerada.
Embora pontualmente haja dificuldade em encontrar manobrador com disponibilidade para apenas meio dia de trabalho, há sempre um “homem da máquina” relativamente próximo do local onde se pretende fazer um estudo geotécnico.
